Overview

Imbros Gorge is in the Sfakia province and is the second-largest gorge in Crete, following the Samaria Gorge. The picturesque scenery and its wilderness, in combination with the low difficulty, make the descent of Imbros ideal for families with children. The walking length of the gorge is 9 km, and the course lasts about 2.5 hours. You can walk through the gorge all year round, and it is definitely worth seeing.

  • 2nd largest gorge in Crete (9 km)
  • Very nice for hikers, even beginners
  • Swim in the refreshing cool waters of southern Cretan villages in the end

Full Description

From Imbros Village, you will start hiking to “Komitades” village. You will encounter traces of the old stone-paved trail that was once the main passage from Sfakia to Chania.

Imbros Gorge was the escape route for thousands of allied troops retreating from the north of the island. During the Battle of Crete in 1941, the troops headed for Chora Sfakion to be collected by ships.

After approximately one hour of walking into the gorge, you will reach the narrowest point of the gorge. The walls of the gorge are less than 2 meters apart and tower 300 m. above. At the end of the gorge, you will reach “Komitades” village, where the bus will take you to Chora Sfakion.

Chora Sfakion is the capital of the remote and mountainous region of Sfakia. The untamed landscape is combined with a quiet, charming seaside settlement. The sandy beach with crystal-clear blue waters is suitable for relaxation after hiking. A few coffee shops and taverns are located within and around the villages. In its northern neighborhood, you will find the ruins of the Venetian “Fortress of Sfakia” or “Castel di Sfacia or Sfachia” where you can get a panoramic view of Sfakia and admire the wilderness of nature.

Absolutely brill. Contacted company, great response. Very good competitively priced trips. Chose Imbros gorge and was not disappointed. Picked up near hotel on time. Guide very nice and informative, but just followed everyone and was last out of gorge to make sure we all got down safely. Then had a few hours walking around Sfakia. Went up to the cave church and had a fabulous fish soup in a restaurant on the front. Would highly recommend the company, for price and organisation.

We took the tour to The Imbros Gorge with the company. I choose this tour because I was worried I could not manage the Samaria gorge. I used to hiking, but not in this kind of terrain and heat. It was a good decision for me. The hike was challanging but it was worth it. It is a special place. We were picked op on time. The bus was a nice comfortable model with good airconditon. When we arrived at the entrance there was time for a quick break for wc. It is 2,5 euro for entrance. We had a lovely guide who kept us well informed and safe. She went in with us and followed the group and made sure that everybody was managing well. On the way out of the gorge there were an opportunity to take a quick
